(More customer reviews)I'd love to say this product worked as advertised, but it doesn't seem to. The first clue that something was off was that the instructions are unintelligible -- translated so poorly from the Japanese that they're almost impossible to follow. I don't know about other people, but this makes me very suspicious. I'm a technical writer, and I feel like a reputable product would have better instructions than these (it's such a simple thing to do). The second clue was that, if water was left in the cup for more than a few minutes, it had an unpleasant, strong taste. Also, I can't recommend dealing with this company. I had to call them twice, and each time they were unhelpful and abrupt; my impression was that if I'd been upset or expressed any righteous indignation - done anything other than remaining calm - they would have gone beyond rude to nasty. They said they were going to deduct a 15% restocking fee even though the product produced a bad taste, and despite the fact that I'd tested the water and saw no pH change. They claim that water testing strips don't work, and said they'd need to test the cup themselves. To their credit, although the conversations were difficult, they did refund me the full cost of the cup.

Bought 2 to replace a pair in tall housing. the inner hole measures 1 in. Apparently that changes with brand or something. My old filter joiner that lets me stack a pair in the housing wouldn't work with these filters.The old one was too big.

(More customer reviews)I purchaced two Fit & Fresh bottles with 4 filters, I do not recommend. Go with just a plain water bottle. I love the idea, but this product needs some work. This filter leaves a residue. I also didn't like that after each use the filter's all wet so I let it dry completly (which takes a while) before putting back together.

Berkey has published no evidence tthat their filter can remove viruses which are usually several orders of magnitude smaller than bacteria and parasites/cysts.

Berkey also has not published comprehensive test results such as are commonly provided for RO filters. I would guess the reason they have not published such information is that their filter, unlike RO units, is ineffective against most dissolved contaminants or even very small particulates such as viruses. The lack of any such published data of their filter's efficacy is why they cannot be sold in California.

Berkey is essentially selling a filter that they do not provide comprehensive specs for and claim that a TDS meter will not quantify its efficacy. So, that leaves a typical user with no way to test the effectiveness of the Berkey filter. I certainly would not trust Berkey any more than I would a municipal water company, and probably much less since at least the water company publishes their test data.

Berkey's advertising material claims their filter is effective on a variety of contaminants, but they do not specify the test conditions (concentration of contaminants in the feed water among other things).The test data they released from reputable labs only address a handful of contaminants (the substances that are the easiest to remove such as E. coli and chlorine--using the activated charcoal/black berkey elements)

Also, how does the Berkey filter distinguish between "healthful" and "unhealthful" minerals/metals/substances? What it comes down to is the Berkey filter will remove a portion of the substances that are attracted to activated charcoal if the black berkey option is used, and a portion of the substances attracted to alumina if the fluoride/arsenic option is used. If neither option is used, all it does is remove the larger particulates. (It's funny that a "minute" unquantified amount of aluminum compound (presumably mostly aluminum oxide otherwise known as alumina) introduced by their fluoride filter is harmless, but a minute amount of fluoride and other substances is a serious health hazard.)

There is no evidence the Berkey filter with or without the optional elements is superior to any RO system. Since Berkey does not provide comparable test data, we have no way of knowing with any certainty though basic chemistry and the data from a simple TDS meter strongly suggests the Berkey filter is not effective against dissolved contaminants.

(More customer reviews)This is an amazing idea - what took so long to invent this? I have owned and used mine for the past several months now and LOVE it. The water tastes great (and I'm very picky about water flavor), and it pays for itself quickly if you're a frequent traveler & have been forced to buy $4 water at the airport. Shipping was extremely fast from the company and instructions were given on how to start using the bottle. The bottle does not leak when closed properly, although mine did when I opened it on a flight due to increased cabin pressure (I now leave it slightly open during flights to prevent pressure buildup within). It's a wonderfully freeing feeling to know you can go anywhere with running water and not have to lug around tons of water bottles. I think the easy access also has helped me drink more water in general also. I highly recommend this product - it's cheap (you will save $$!), convenient, and better for the environment.

(More customer reviews)We needed a second filter for our cottage where we spend 8 weeks a year. Our other is a Berkey Light. The water tastes equally good (excellent) and the prep of the filter elements was easier. The only con was that the plugs for the holes for extra elements were incredibly difficult to insert, but I feel certain that they won't leak! I recommend.
