(More customer reviews)To reset CHANGE FILTER light: Press and hold the LIGHT and LOCK pads until the CHANGE FILTER light blinks (approx. 3 seconds). The control is now reset for 12 months or another 416 gallons. [whichever comes first]. Note: the 7003 filter is rated at 6 months replacement because it filters more substances than the 7002. The pricing is the same. I have no problem with this over the past several years. If you buy from maytagfilters.com it will cost more ($35.95 if you buy 3) than the home center pricing ($34.95 for 1), but the AMAZON price is the best around.

(More customer reviews)You gotta hand it to Maytag - they made replacing the water filter very simple.Took all of about 30 seconds from start to finish.And about 20 seconds of that was wiping up the water that dripped out of the old filter when I pulled it out, so the next change should go even better;-)

We have a family of six and we drink water almost exclusively, so I went ahead and changed the filter at six months just like the owner's guide recommended.However, I could see no evidence that the filter was near its end of life and am convinced that I can get more use out of the filters than the suggested six months.I will try to keep an eye on things, but without a little window I really have no way other than flow to know what is going on.

And that is why I gave this a rating of four stars.The filter seems to work wonderfully and replacement is a breeze, but I would be happier if I could look at the state of the filter while it is in use.

If the consumer uses one gallon of water per day in the form of water from the refrigerator dispenser and ice from the ice dispenser, the filter will last 750 days; i.e., just over TWO years. In general, there is no reason to replace the filter yearly, unless you have a really yuccky water source.

In a small household of two adults, the filter should last considerably longer than two years. Furthermore, with the addition of a filtered water dispenser at the sink (such as a GE undercounter unit), the refrigerator filter would be functional for a few years. The undercounter units have a quite large capacity and some use two filter cartridges.
