(More customer reviews)If you EVER backpack where the water supply is silty (e.g. the Colorado River through Grand Canyon, the Paria River, etc.) this is absolutely the quickest (30 mins), lightest (a 0.14-oz. packet cleans 10 liters of water), most reliable (no filter to clog!!), and easiest way to get CLEAR, CLEAN drinking water.

I'm not kidding. I used this on a 5-day backpack in Grand Canyon National Park where our only source of drinking water was the totally silt-clogged Colorado River. This stuff gave us gallons of delicious, clear, totally safe drinking water. One day we had way more purified water than we needed, and actually gave several liters of our purified water to some other hikers whose pumps had all completely clogged up. It's truly amazing -- I can't believe more backpackers don't know about it.

And in case you don't trust it, it's used all over the world by government and humanitarian groups to clean and purify water in 3rd-world countries, where the water quality is basically like a sewer. This stuff makes any water safe to drink. You gotta try it!!

(More customer reviews)I'm quite surprised with what some reviewers are saying. I have own this about 2 months now and I absolutly love it. I haven't had any problems with thecartridges yet. I will admit that it doesn't give 75 drinks per cartridge as it advertises, but that fact that I got about 45-50 12oz servings out of it makes it well worth the price. So far I have tried the grape and raspberry and love them both. I think they taste exactly similar to the $1.25 per bottle water made my dasani and aquafina.

Plus the plain old water is really fresh and clear tastin.

(More customer reviews)These 2 stages are great. I used to smell metal and chlorine but now NOTHING! I usually buy from Target where they are $14 each, so the price is better here. They also usually have a little of the red indicator already showing, but not these from Amazon. I cant say how many gallons Ive gotten but I would say a couple months pass before I change it. I never feel like, 'Boy I just changed this thing'. I use it for all cooking, tea, washing vegetables and I drink lots of water everyday. Most of the reviews for the 3-stage complain about low water pressure and not lasting very long but I dont have that issue with these 2-stage. As ususal new does not mean better. Even though the 3-stage is cheaper I would suggest investing in the 2-stage as it will pay off in the end.

(More customer reviews)I have been using these for about 8 years now and moved to the 3 stage when they came out.I use them primarily for drinking water and cooking.They typically last about 3 months for me.I go through a LOT of drinking water and probably less than average for cooking.

Based on using them on two different water systems, I also believe the quality of the water going in makes a huge difference in the life of the filter... but then that really is just common sense isn't it?For instance, using it the week after a city wide fire hydrant flushing will use one up very quickly.I can't speak to what that means to anyone else, but it tells me it is WORKING!

As another reviewer mentioned... ONE HOT WATER EPISODE WILL KILL A FILTER!It is a shame it is this way, but I have on two occasions had someone turn on hot water and let it run through the filter for a while.The filter would stop flowing within a day after that.The instructions warn against this, but accidents happen.

On the other hand, I had one that would not flow at all right out of the box.I called the 800 number on the box, told them what happened and that I had put in a different filter, which worked, and then tried this one again... showing that I had done my due diligence, and I had a replacement in the mail within a week, no cost, without having to return the failed one.

Also, if you buy the 6 pack, they are under $10 each.

It absolutely DOES make the water taste and smell better than plain tap water.
