Once, long ago, PUR was a great company with great water filtering technology. I still love their filters! Unfortunately, a big bad company named Proctor and Gamble bought them and messed them over in favor of customer abuse. This was accomplished using two methods. The first method is called 'planned obsolescence' whereby their faucet mount apparatus leak and die briefly after the end of the warranty period. (It didn't used to be that way in the good old days). The second method is called 'timed death' whereby their apparatus lock up their enclosed filters at a preset volume of filtered water, whether the filter is actually used up or not.

Planned obsolescence can be overcome by calling up Proctor and Gamble BEFORE your warranty runs out, and letting them know that your PUR apparatus is squirting water all over your kitchen. Ask them to send you a replacement or a replacement certificate. If need be, call repeatedly asking to speak to the President of P&G, never taking 'no' for an answer. Then take your certificate and get another PUR apparatus. This will provide you with a lifetime for the apparatus more representative of the lifetime of original PUR apparatus. You've cheated no one. P&G's cheat on you has been overcome.

The timed death lockout of your filter is extremely easy to overcome. Pull out the filter from the apparatus. This resets the nasty timing device to zero again. Put your filter back in. TADA! You're done. Your filter will work as before. Note, however, that PUR filters do eventually get clogged with stuff. You'll know when to change it.

I hope that helps everyone restore goodness to the universe. I still love PUR filters better than any other brand and wouldn't be without them. It's P&G's customer abuse that's not worth liking. Shame on you P&G.

(More customer reviews)I've used these PUR water filters for the past two decades. As a scientist, I've tested these units, before and after water passes through them, using an Advanced electronic pH and electron load test meter. I tried other filtering systems and they tend to lower the pH of the water when water passes through them, making the water more acidic. However, the PUR water filter does not do that. If the water goes in at pH 7.6, it comes out pH 7.6. Filters like Arrowhead have tested with the water going in at pH 7.6 and come out pH 6.6. You want your body to stay alklaine so you have high electron conductivity. The ideal pH for the body is pH 7.4 which is what the blood is always at. The body will rob all other areas of the body to keep the blood alkaline. In short, your body will rob from your bones to get calcium and other minerals to do this. This results in osteoporosis as a result. Doing everything you can to keep your pH and electron load close to 7.4 will not only give you a long life, but a healthy one as well; the way God intended your body to work. Drugs are a deception. The word drug means "to mask" or "to cover up". You don't want to cover up anything. You want to make sure at all times your body is never in deficiency so it operates at full capacity at all times. High pH keeps the blood clean and oxygen transport up.

It's bad enough so many people have stopped eating God's raw fruits and vegetables which are high in alkalinity. Even fruits, which start out as acid due to their sugar load in the Krebs cycle of the GItract, leave an alkaline residue higher than their amino acid sugar load when digestion is complete. Cooked foods become acidic after they are cooked and stay that way as you ingest them. You can watch a live cell blood exam and see what processed foods do to healthy blood in seconds, once the food enters the blood. The cell membranes of the blood lose electron load fast and cell integrity is immediately compromised when eating the Standard American Diet (SAD). In short, the cells start to turn anemic, cling together (rouleau) and start to decompose with just one meal of the American diet. God's way keeps your body "clean" and keeps "light" in your body through high electron load, which is what the pH of the body is all about. Light in the body at the organic level means life: Darkness means death.

I not only use the PUR water filter, but I use a low cost distiller that is really great for pulling out all the crud that gets into our city pipes here in Los Angeles. I've given a link to the one I've used the past 6 years. Even though the collector bottle is plastic, I've logged no adverse effects from the collector bottle, as I've tested the water along the way, after it is distilled. If it really bothers you, just buy a glass or ceramic collector and don't use the plastic one provided with the distiller. Otherwise the distiller is low cost and very good at what it does. The water tastes fabulous after it is distilled, especially when chilled. Also the pH is not affected at all after distillation. It's stainless steel tub makes for easy clean up when you use the mineral salts supplied to "unstick" all the stuff that tends to stick to the stainless steel over uses to create distilled water. Remember, your body is made out of mostly water, even the cell membranes. When you realize that actually 90% of your body is made from water as an engineering element when you consider the cell membranes as well as the body fluids, don't you want the replacment water going into your body to be top notch, as well as low cost to create?

(More customer reviews)I picked up one of these (FM3333) for my office. One thing that caught my eye is that it included a 2-stage filter. We have used a single-stage on-tap filter by another maker in the past, but it clogged up too quickly, so having a filter that could trap sediment was an important consideration.

The filter holder installed on the faucet effortlessly without any tools. Our faucet has exterior screw threads, so the faucet adapter included in the package wasn't needed.

The filter itself took a little extra effort to insert into the filter holder. It seemed to be a very tight fit (but not an improper fit).

Filtered water comes out the bottom not really in a stream or a spray, but somewhere in between.It comes out at a slower rate than unfiltered, but I expected that.It's an adequate rate, not a trickle by any means.

Controlling the filter couldn't be simpler or more pleasant.Tip it backwards to bypass the filter, tilt it straight up again to filter again.The tilting action feels very smooth, no feeling of cheap-plastic friction.

Another nice feature is the gauge that shows roughly how much use is left before the filter needs to be changed.It's purely mechanical, no batteries necessary.

I recommend the Pur without hesitation.

(More customer reviews)To quickly answer the question most people will want to know about, the flavoring option is a mixed bag.Personally, I think it tastes great but I am used to the flavor of "diet" tasting drinks so if you can stand drinks like Crystal Light, Fresca soda, or similar you will probably like this as well.This was a present for my mother, however, and she doesn't like the taste.Adding flavor is completely optional.It's simply a small plastic container that is attached to the front of the purifier and it squirts a small amount of sucralose flavoring into the water dispensed from the separate tap.

I'm also pleased to note that this matches a chrome faucet perfectly and I didn't need separate (included) adapters during installation.My only complaint is you never feel like it is installed securely enough.While only finger tightening was enough to use without leaks, it still moves around sideways a lot.I'm not sure if that was the intent, but I would have preferred something that locks solidly into place.Installation of the filter is idiot-proof as you are literally placing a square peg into a round hole.Screw the cap on the front into place, installing the flavor cartridge if you desire, and you're ready to go.

The filters are rated to purify 100 gallons before needing replacement.A small electronic light blinks green, yellow, or red when you switch to purified water as an indicator.Most importantly, the water tastes great and I find myself drinking a lot more of it in place of soda or other drinks.That certainly can't be a bad thing.Recommended.

Update (May, 2008):I feel I should update this review.While my purifier worked, I was disheartened to read so many reviews saying these were defective.After about six months of use I started to see symptoms of problems others were complaining about such as leakage from the mount and decreased water pressure (likely due to a loose seal).P&G, the makers of Pur, were nice enough to send me a coupon for a replacement faucet but unfortunately the replacement leaked everywhere.I now question the quality and reliability of these devices, but cannot change my original rating.While the idea is great, these do seem to be cheap junk and I would not recommend them now.I guess I was lucky the first time.

(More customer reviews)The PUR CR-6000C 2 Stage Oval Water Pitcher with LED Indicator has some very strong positives that make it a good choice.However, it also has some weaknesses that will hopefully be addressed in a re-design.As long as you know what the weaknesses are, you should be able to get more use of the benefits of this product than some people have reported.

Pros:
+ Takes up a small amount of floor space
+ Great 2 stage filters leak less filter debris than other filters
+ It has an attractive look with a sleek body
+ The included indicator reminds you when to change filters
+ The price is very reasonable on an annual basis

Cons:
- The body isn't as solid as it could be, so use both hands to pick it up
- The filters seem to run out quickly
- Removing the cover takes some practice

The slim form factor has a smaller footprint and takes up less space, but it also puts more weight on the handle and the body every time you pick it up.So most of the complaints about cracking are due to the slim oval design, and not just the thickness of the pitcher.How do you compensate for that?Simply use your other hand to hold the front of the pitcher when you pick it up and relieve some of the pressure on the body and handle.

The other common complaint has to do with the design of the lid, which seems to make the pitcher difficult to fill.But after the first time, the lid opens much more easily.Simply put your thumb into the back tab of the lid an it will open easily.What's more, this model has the added benefit of having a nice seal when closed, so refrigerator odors won't get into your water.Just make sure to wait till your water has gone through the filter before putting it away, to avoid spilling.

Other than the obvious savings of cutting down on bottled water and the plastic waste that comes with it, the best feature of this pitcher has to be the filter.As a long-time Brita user, I got tired of the filter material ending up in my water.Not only does the two stage filter of this model screw in securely, it has less seepage of filter material.And of course, most importantly, the water tastes great.I can't comment on whether or not it removed more bacteria, because I didn't run any scientific tests.But the taste was definitely an improvement over other filters.

Now there is a larger dispenser that may be better for those with space in their fridge for it. Obviously you will have less breakage issues, but it takes up much more room.So it's a trade-off.

The flashing indicator on the top is meant to calculate how many refills you have gone through, and it will tell you when you have to change your filter.Even at $20 for a three pack, this system basically comes out to $60 a year for filters and the pitcher.Not bad, even if you had to replace the pitcher every year.

Overall, despite the warts this is a good product.If you don't have the room for the larger dispenser, or the faucet mount, then this will work for you.Just handle it with care.

(More customer reviews)I have been using these for about 8 years now and moved to the 3 stage when they came out.I use them primarily for drinking water and cooking.They typically last about 3 months for me.I go through a LOT of drinking water and probably less than average for cooking.

Based on using them on two different water systems, I also believe the quality of the water going in makes a huge difference in the life of the filter... but then that really is just common sense isn't it?For instance, using it the week after a city wide fire hydrant flushing will use one up very quickly.I can't speak to what that means to anyone else, but it tells me it is WORKING!

As another reviewer mentioned... ONE HOT WATER EPISODE WILL KILL A FILTER!It is a shame it is this way, but I have on two occasions had someone turn on hot water and let it run through the filter for a while.The filter would stop flowing within a day after that.The instructions warn against this, but accidents happen.

On the other hand, I had one that would not flow at all right out of the box.I called the 800 number on the box, told them what happened and that I had put in a different filter, which worked, and then tried this one again... showing that I had done my due diligence, and I had a replacement in the mail within a week, no cost, without having to return the failed one.

Also, if you buy the 6 pack, they are under $10 each.

It absolutely DOES make the water taste and smell better than plain tap water.
