(More customer reviews)If you EVER backpack where the water supply is silty (e.g. the Colorado River through Grand Canyon, the Paria River, etc.) this is absolutely the quickest (30 mins), lightest (a 0.14-oz. packet cleans 10 liters of water), most reliable (no filter to clog!!), and easiest way to get CLEAR, CLEAN drinking water.

I'm not kidding. I used this on a 5-day backpack in Grand Canyon National Park where our only source of drinking water was the totally silt-clogged Colorado River. This stuff gave us gallons of delicious, clear, totally safe drinking water. One day we had way more purified water than we needed, and actually gave several liters of our purified water to some other hikers whose pumps had all completely clogged up. It's truly amazing -- I can't believe more backpackers don't know about it.

And in case you don't trust it, it's used all over the world by government and humanitarian groups to clean and purify water in 3rd-world countries, where the water quality is basically like a sewer. This stuff makes any water safe to drink. You gotta try it!!

Combining activated carbon, this one-stage replacement microfilter for the easy-to-use Pur water pitcher reduces chlorine, sediment, bad taste, and odor from water, and includes an ion-exchange resin that helps eliminate lead and copper. In addition, the filter reduces pesticides (lindane, atrazine, and 2,4-D) and chemicals that are linked to increased cancer risk (benzene, TTHMs, and toxaphene). While Pur filters rid water of many chemicals, coloration, and bad flavors, they do not soften water or remove fluoride. The filter measures approximately 2-1/4 by 2-1/4 by 4-1/2 inches and should be changed every 40 gallons (approximately one to two months) for best results.

Once, long ago, PUR was a great company with great water filtering technology. I still love their filters! Unfortunately, a big bad company named Proctor and Gamble bought them and messed them over in favor of customer abuse. This was accomplished using two methods. The first method is called 'planned obsolescence' whereby their faucet mount apparatus leak and die briefly after the end of the warranty period. (It didn't used to be that way in the good old days). The second method is called 'timed death' whereby their apparatus lock up their enclosed filters at a preset volume of filtered water, whether the filter is actually used up or not.

Planned obsolescence can be overcome by calling up Proctor and Gamble BEFORE your warranty runs out, and letting them know that your PUR apparatus is squirting water all over your kitchen. Ask them to send you a replacement or a replacement certificate. If need be, call repeatedly asking to speak to the President of P&G, never taking 'no' for an answer. Then take your certificate and get another PUR apparatus. This will provide you with a lifetime for the apparatus more representative of the lifetime of original PUR apparatus. You've cheated no one. P&G's cheat on you has been overcome.

The timed death lockout of your filter is extremely easy to overcome. Pull out the filter from the apparatus. This resets the nasty timing device to zero again. Put your filter back in. TADA! You're done. Your filter will work as before. Note, however, that PUR filters do eventually get clogged with stuff. You'll know when to change it.

I hope that helps everyone restore goodness to the universe. I still love PUR filters better than any other brand and wouldn't be without them. It's P&G's customer abuse that's not worth liking. Shame on you P&G.

(More customer reviews)Assuming that the filter cartridge works as advertised, I rate this a superior product (with caveats).

I have used other name brand faucet filters such as Culligan and PUR, and they were okay, but this one seems to have a more sturdy build, especially for the price. In addition, the flow rate is much better. With the others, it took over two minutes to fill a one-gallon jug; with this, about 35 seconds.

It also pivots out of the way with ease, whereas the others have an annoying friction, probably due to o-ring seals.

Yet, the CrystalQuest doesn't leak (after four months' use). It remains to be seen whether or not it will develop leaks; the others did after about a year of use. I suspect this one is less susceptible to leaks, due to its flow rate, which indicates much less back pressure.

Caveats: although the filter is highly rated, it does seem I get more of a chlorine taste than I did with my previous buys. And also, when I bought it, the filter cartridges were rated for a year/2000 gallons (much better than the others, typically 3 months/200 gallons), yet my warranty says void if the cartridge is used for more than six months.

Huh? Shouldn't the system be warranted for as long as the cartridge?

Anyway, for the price, I rate it better than the others I have used, and the price is right. The replacement cartridges are also more reasonably- priced than the bigger name brands.
